Well this has got to be the worst launch of a new domain extension for a long time , the .cm extension release has been delayed again by the registrar. The .cm extension launch seems to have been plagued by gremlins and technical issues over the last couple of months, each time the proposed release date creeps round what do you know the registrar find another bug it their system delaying the release once again. Will it be third time lucky for the .cm registry ? Who knows as this time round, there doesn’t seem to be any indication as to when the .cm registry will be in a position to actually launch.

According to COCCA the organisation ion charge of running the back end for .cm, the DNS servers from Cameroon’s Telco, Camtel, are not reliable enough to be used. Check out what COCCA have to say. This does not help the people who have placed orders for .cm domains and still have no way of canceling potential .cm applications they have made as this option was removed last time the release date was changed.

Any how with a pretty poor track record so far and the extension hasn’t even launched yet what are your opinions on the .cm domain debarcle.

Office.com, is Microsoft preparing for the launch of Office 2010.

Microsoft has recently acquired the domain name Office.com for an undisclosed amount. The domain was purchased from a Brussels-based company, according to searches of Internet registration records the domain registration transaction occurred on August 4 2009.

The domain, which was previously registered to the ContactOffice Group, ContactOffice previously used the Office.com domain to hosts online office productivity tools.

Office.com currently shows a message informing its users that the company will be transferring its online activities to the ContactOffice.com domain.

“As of Friday, July 31, 2009, Office.com will no longer be available,” said Tom Graham, a ContactOffice employee, in the message still live on the site. Also, if you use POP or IMAP with Office.com you will need to change your settings to pop.contactoffice.net and imap.contactoffice.net respectively,” Graham added.

There has been speculation from many online bloggers that Microsoft will use the Office.com domain for online versions of its popular Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote applications via its Office Live Workspace (currently in beta) scheduled for simultaneous release with Office 2010 for release in the first half of of next year.

.CM Landrush Update

After over a week of speculation as to when the .CM Landrush was to begin, DomainMonster.com has posted an update on the .cm Landrush and following auctions that was originally stated to close over a week ago.

The .CM registry is re-opening the Landrush period allowing for additional applications to register .cm domains until the 23rd August 2009 at 23:59:59 UTC. The strange thing is that although the registry have extended the registration time frame they are not allowing any cancellations during this period.

The .CM Registry have also stated that the Open Registration start date as 27th August 2009 at 00:00:01 UTC.

Twitter goes down due to DOS attack

Twitter was taken offline for several hours today due to a denial of service attack (DDoS). Twitter confirmed the attack via a post on its official blog earlier today.

The statement reads:

“We are defending against this attack now and will continue to update our status blog as we continue to defend and later investigate.”

Twitter also reports that the service has been resumed but they are still continuing to defend against and recover from this attack.

The latest update from Twitter regarding the DOS attack on the Twitter Status Blog Reads:

Update (9:46a): As we recover, users will experience some longer load times and slowness. This includes timeouts to API clients. We’re working to get back to 100% as quickly as we can.

Users are also experiencing outages and extremely long page load times with Facebook today, maybe due to the flood of Twitter traffic heading over to Facebook to get their social network fix.

The domain name Jesus.net was sold this week on Sedo for $124,337. The domain currently forwards to www.jesusinternetproject.com. The website states:

“The Jesus Internet Project is a project run by the ministry Top Mission in partnership with Christian organizations and churches. The vision is to share, through interactive websites, the Good News of Jesus Christ to the Internet Users of the thirty-five most-used languages on the Internet. Criminal prosecution over domain theft – P2P.com

Recently the number of domain name theft reports has been steadily growing and with the latest case of Warren Weitzman,a well known domainer being the victim of such thefts having Adios.com, sou.com and many other domains stolen although the accused in t P2P.com case is not related to the Weitzman case it is pleasing to see that the law is finally catching up with this online crime that seems to have been growing rapidly over the last few years and will hopefully send a warning to potential domain thieves and establish a grounding for future prosecutions.

A New Jersey man is charged with stealing a the domain name p2p.com and reselling it on eBay to an NBA basketball player, this is one of the first prosecutions of a suspected domain name theft in the US.

Daniel Goncalves, 25, hacked into an email account belonging to the owners of the P2P.com domain name, New Jersey Police stated on Monday. He allegedly transferred the ownership of the domain from the original owners GoDaddy account to an account controlled by himself. The domain name was then and resold the on eBay to Mark Madsen, a Los Angeles Clippers forward who claims to be an innocent party stating that he did not know the name was stolen. Madsen payed $111,000, for the P2P.com domain and still controls the domain name.

Goncalves was arrested on Thursday on charges of theft by unlawful taking or deception, identity theft and computer theft. Goncalves faces up to 30 years in jail as each charge caries a maximum sentence of 10 years. Goncalves is currently free on a bail after posting a $60,000 bail.

Jeremiah Johnston, president of the Washington, D.C.-based Internet Commerce Association, said the criminal prosecution is the first of its kind and should serve as a wake-up call for other law enforcement agencies.

“They’re usually a few years behind new technology trends,” Johnston said. “That’s frustrating when you have domain names selling for seven figures.”

The legitimate owners of P2P.com have a pending civil suit against Goncalves, and GoDaddy. They estimate the group has spent $500,000 over the last 30 months trying to pursue Goncalves and reclaim control of their stollen domain.

Arrests for domain theft are rare. The P2P.com owners tried to persuade Florida prosecutors to pursue a case against Goncalves in Florida the state of the P2P.coms owners but their requests was dropped due to apparent lack of evidence.

After the Florida prosecutors dropped their investigation, New Jersey State Police reviewed the P2P.com case, In May of 2009 the NJ District Attorney approved the indictment and on July 30th Goncalves was arrested at his home and his computers were seized.

This is a case to watch and the out come could affect domain law forever.
